When you create a platform called Ask A Millionaire, you get a lot of questions. I’ve found that some of the same questions arise on a regular basis and one of the most frequently asked questions is: How do you stay motivated and focused?

The short answer is this, put your head down and keep moving forward. Sure, there is a discovery stage where you gather information and brainstorm about what exactly you are and what do you want to do, but once you’ve determined your goal, ambition or metaphorical destination, it is important to stay focused. The best way I’ve found to do this is simply to see your target, square up, put your head down and move forward step by step. This is where goal setting becomes more than just an exercise, it becomes strategy.

Step one to goal setting is the most obvious step, but for some reason or another it is also the step that most people skip. Step one: WRITE THAT SHIT DOWN. If you do not take the time to define your goals, you are setting yourself up to fail. I liken this phase to building a house. What is the first thing you need? Blueprints! These represent the work behind establishing your plan. Sure, you may pivot a bit and make some adjustments as you go but at least you have a direction to step and an idea of where you think you’re going. The next step is foundation, without a strong foundation you may as well be building a house of cards and prepare for the fall.

One of the best tools I’ve found for the initial planning stage of any endeavor is the use of the SMART acronym. There are several variations (google it) but the one I like most is:

  • Specific
  • Measureable
  • Action-Oriented
  • Results-Oriented
  • Time-based

Using this SMART acronym or another variation can help you be successful in almost any pursuit, be it personal or professional. Whether you are building a house, a business, an ideal body or a better world, you must know what you want to achieve and how in which you plan to do it. To quote American philanthropist Elbert Hubbard, “Many people fail in life, not for lack of ability or brains or even courage, but simply because they have never organized their energies around a goal”.

There are a number of printable worksheets online that can help you delineate your ambition or project through SMART goal setting, you can find some on my Pinterest account here.

Step one: get out there, organize those energies and get goaling!

Step two: put your head down and keep moving forward

Step three: stay tuned, you’ve got this
